President’s Report

With 2011 slowly drawing to a close and with it my first year in the President’s role, I felt it would be an opportune time to extend thanks to my colleagues who graciously volunteer their time to allow our association to achieve its objectives. Talk is cheap, but the cumulative time donated by our members in a given year is not. Our Board of Directors and the Executive Committee met on eight separate occasions in 2011.

Our committee of examiners held four interviews and recommended four designations, while our complaints, discipline, public relations, membership, political action and various ad hoc committees met throughout the year to handle the day-to-day activities of the association and to carry out a number of initiatives mandated by the Board and Executive committees. When I consider the calibre of the professionals who sit on these committees and the opportunity cost of their time (which is surely in the hundreds of thousands of dollars), I am encouraged by the level of interest that our members are showing, and this interest makes me optimistic with what we can achieve in the future.

With all of these opportunities directly in front of us, we should ask ourselves what we’d like our profession to look like in the future. I envision a unified membership dedicated to upholding the professional standards that we value. I envision a network of colleagues who cooperate with one another, and celebrate the success of their peers. I envision a brand that instils confidence in consumers and an association that is viewed as the authoritative voice on valuation issues in the Province.

I hope you will all take the opportunity to network with your colleagues at our Christmas reception on December 15 at the Park Place Hotel & Conference Centre in Dartmouth. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and a prosperous 2012.

Andre Pouliot, MRICS, AACI
President

Post 6 CPD Credits for 2011

NSREAA members (except for Candidate members) are reminded that the deadline for posting CPD credits is December 31.  A minimum of 6 credits is required each year, failing which a $250 fine is payable.

NSREAA/AIC members may post CPD credits via the AIC website. (Note - AIC members who attained either the CRA or AACI designation during 2011 do not have to post any credits for 2011.)

Those who are not AIC members are  reminded to complete the CPD form and submit it via fax to the NSREAA office (fax: 902.422.3717)

If you need a copy of the CPD form, please

Work is in process now on an updated website for NSREAA.

Professional Practice Seminar

NSREAA members will know that three Professional Practice Seminars were held during 2011 - in May, October and November.

The November seminar was held on a Thursday/Friday format, rather than our normal Friday/Saturday format.

At least two Professional Practice Seminars will be scheduled for 2012, one in the Spring and one in the fall. Note that if you have not participated in one of these seminars in the current CPD cycle,
you must register for and attend such a seminar by the end of 2012, which is the end of the current CPD cycle.

If there is enough interest, we will again schedule a seminar to be held on two week days, rather than one week day and one weekend day.

The CPD program requires you to have a minimum of 60 CPD credits for the five-year cycle (2008-2012). The Professional Practice Seminar is the only mandatory seminar in the Continuing Professional Development Program. If you do not have the 14 credits from the Professional Practice Seminar (even if you have a million other CPD credits), your CPD program will be deemed to be
incomplete, and you will be subject to a fine.

Executive Director

Your Executive Director, Davida Mackay, will be undergoing hip replacement surgery in early December, so will not be in the office for the month of December. In her absence, Carol Dobson will manage the NSREAA office.
